Default GOING AWAY FOR 2 WEEKS WHAT TO DO!!!!!!

Hi everyone

Not sure if this is the right thread anyways if its not please mvoe it somewhere..

Now to the point, Around mid to the end of June i will be going away for awhile and i don't know what i will do with my neps especially the big ones...I asked my dad and he said probally i can move them temporarily to my cousin's house and let him take care of it during that time (he uses RO water lol) Well im fine with that i will most probally be moving all my small plants there since those are the only ones which are small enough to be moved in a car..Others are just way to big to even fit into a car without cutting down the vines....Sooo what can i do? I was thinking about moving it into the toilet since it has considered bright light but not as much as my balcony but i'm worried about air circulation but main point here isn't air circulation more like just keeping them ALIVE for 2 weeks..Will the plants die if i keep them in a deep tray for the 2 weeks so that it'll dry out slowly?

Ken

Hi Ken,

Usually bigger plants are more tolerative than smaller plants so you can use the tray method.

Hope you'll have a safe trip though!

What I do when I go on a long trip is to move them away from my apartment window and place them on trays of water about 2 inches high. for your case you will need to move them in the house from your balcony.

They will be fine when you get back. If you are leaving for 2 weeks, I think you should have about 3 inches of water for your big pots.

Just give them bright light (ie. no direct sun) and soak the pots in water. They will be fine too when you close all windows and doors for the holidays. In fact it helps as humidity is higher for them.

Hi Ken,
You can use this DIY automatic water refill method.
Get a big plastic bottle, drill or poke a 0.5 cm hole about 2" down from the opening, (Optional: another one about 2 cm down from the opening. If the water in the bottle could be able to flow down from the opening easily, then this is not necessary, it depends on how you possition the bottle).
Fill the bottle with water, close the opening with your thump and quickly place the bottle up side down into the 2" water in the water tray that you are going to put your pots in (I'm talking about those big trays that we could put many pots in). Now, to position it in the tray is tricky here, think of a way to position it. If a big pot is to be put in the tray, then just tie the bottle to the pot. The water flow out from the bottle whenever the water level in the tray gets lower the hole you drilled. Thus the water level will remain 2" for many days. You can use 2 or even 3 bottles if you are worry, but I think one bottle is more than enough.
Hope this helps.

I used this system that TS mentioned before, but when I went on a trip recently 1 week trip, I forgot to perpare, plus it won't work as my trays are full of pots that I don't have space for the device. Was able to ask someone to water every so often, but I still ended up with a few dead plants. I think that the idea of transferring them to a place with less sunlight and heat would be better. Unless you are experiencing rainy season now or at least occassional rain showers and good temperature. If however your in the same season as me, Hot and not so much rain, then indoors might be the way to go. I also agree that the bigger plants should be able to handle it better, though my Truncata didn't really like being left too long like that.

I'd recommend bagging the plants in a giant clear bag (you can put more than 1 pot in each bag) fill it with about 1 1/2" of water. Tie the bag & leave it in semi-shade, bright but no direct sunlight.

This is what I do to all my newly arrived plants or when I'm too busy to keep a close eye on my nepenthes. I'd say 95% of my plants thrive under this condition, yes especially those requiring cooler temp.

Oh yes, trim all dead leaves & pitchers before bagging, this usually helps avoid molds & fungus.

Good luck.

Ken,

If you are using my suggestion, do not worry about lighting for the plants in the toilet or living area. They will be fine for 2 weeks without direct sunlight. Done it many times with my neps when I go outstation.

Hi guys

Thanks for all your help...Well as for the one TS said i don't really have a big tray i normally have individual trays anyways easier for me (newbie) would be putting trays under it and put it in the bathroom..I have a few zip lock bags so maybe i will cover over some of the pots and fill water inside just like Athene said....Arvin I too realised that truncata doesn't like to much water...Or not it'll be affected by all sort of stuff for exampel mine the rust spot..When i go drier it doesn't make those spots..Well maybe after all this help i will most probally not be shifting my plants anywhere (Lucky for me cos my cous is a nep killer heheh his ventrata is pitcherless)
