new hanging baskets

Not sure if this is a "project" or not...but it sure feels like it! Here's a couple shots of some new 'experiments', unfortunately shot with a cell phone camera. They look pretty good and will be handy for our arriving monsoon season as the cocofiber shell sheds water very easily and will be quite different from my usual clay or plastic pots. I'm trying a few neps but mostly have been transplanting hoyas and ferns.

Nice "experiments" you're doing there like Ali said you sure have a lot of space doing all this like almost everytime hahaha.For me i just hang broomsticks and hand my neps on them.

Hi Shawn the pots look good. I grew some Neps in a similar way many years ago. The mix I used was peat based so a bit differnet from yours. I had gracilis growing outdoors under shadecloth in a temperate zone in inland Australia where we regularly had frosts in the winter. I am sure your plants will thrive in there new pots.

I would expect this to be a good set up for growing highland plants as the air movement throuogh the media that yiou have created would provide a very effective cooling system for the rrots. I think I may try to grow some Darlingtonia in a similar set up and see how it goes.

Very nice Shawn. I had a miranda in one of those basket before, but after almost about a year the coconut fibre holding the media in started to rot leaving a hole. Then the media start to dry out very quickly.

If the plant you have in there is a vigorous one, the roots would have wraped around all the media and the media would not drop out eventhough there is a hole. Just that it was a hassle for me to keep watering it at least once a day.

Thanks guys! Yep David, I've anticipated problems when the shell finally gives up! I'm mostly transplanting hoyas which will hopefully root-up the media very well and hold it together (although the baskets are pretty big!). The neps were just another 'experiment' as I couldn't resist seeing a few planted this way! At least for the next few months I shouldn't have to worry about them flooding out during monsoon!
