Huh?broms grow like this?Can they collect water this way?

Some genera under the bromeliad family don't collect water at all (e.g. Dyckia, Puya, Hechtia, Pitcairnia, Encholirium ....). They are mostly xerix plant and fully terrestial. The one shown is Deuterocohnia brevifolia.
