Hi Casey,
I'm not too sure whether it does hurt the plant or not. I don't use metals to mount my plants as I find it looks very odd. ( solely my own personal taste only). Have seen some nurseries using them but eventually the plant die off after the steel rusted off.
Maybe there are other forumers have better experience than me who can answer you better.
