Rats are smart and cunning...if you use trap that has caught other rat beforehand, they will never go near it as it has got the scent of the other rat on it. You need to rinse the trap with hot water and then submerged it in water for few hours to get rid of the scent.

Another alternative is to use rat glue. There are two type, one is odorless and the other stink like mad...the choice is yours. Just aplly on a piece of plank and place a bait on it.

ps: When using rat poison, make sure you place a bowl of water nearby. This is because the poison only works if the rat drink water after consuming it.
